People living in the UK take quite a few holidays abroad and in this country each year. Choices made about where to go, how to get there and what to do while there can either benefit or harm the environment.

While on holiday

Many of the things you can do to be greener on holiday will be the same things you can do at home—but there are also some extra things too, like avoiding gifts made from endangered plants and animals. Here are some suggestions:

●Making the most of locally produced food and drink, and local activities and attractions will support people in the area you are visiting and reduce the need for further environmental influence from transport;

●Switching off any air conditioning, heating and lights will help reduce climate change effect;

●Save water—some countries suffer from water shortages and saving water can help avoid damage to our natural habitats.

Endangered species

Some gifts and foods available in some countries can be made from endangered plants or animals. Check before you buy, but if in doubt, avoid animal and plant gifts. More details of the types of products to avoid and illegal trade hotspots can be found on the Souvenir Alert webpage.

Making a positive contribution to the place you are visiting

There are ways in which your holiday can help support local people and the environment;

●There are many opportunities to volunteer and help with projects that conserve and improve natural habitats;

●When you are away, or if you are looking for somewhere to visit, you can support projects or attractions which protect wildlife, such as nature reserves and conservation projects.

Somali pirates (海盗) robbed three Thai fishing ships with 77 sailors on board nearly l,200 miles off the Somali coast, the farthest-off-shore attack to date, an officer said Tuesday.

Pirates have gone farther south and east in answer to increased patrols (巡逻) by warships off the Somali shore. The robbing of the three ships Sunday was about 600 miles outside the normal operation area for the international force, said a spokesman.

The spokesman said the attack so far out at sea was a clear sign that the international patrols against pirates were having a “marked effect on pirate activity in the area”.

“Once they start attacking that far out, you’re not even really talking about the Somali basin or areas of water that have any connection with Somalia,” said an officer, Roger Middleton.  “Once you’re that far out, it’s just the Indian Ocean, and it means you’re looking at trade going from the Gulf to Asia, from Asia to South Africa.”

“This is the farthest robbing to date. They are now operating near the Maldives and India,” said another officer.

The three ships—the MV Prantalay 11, 12, and 14—had 77 members on board in total. All of them are Thai, the spokesman said. Before the Sunday robbing, pirates held 11 ships and 228 sailors.

Pirates have increased attacks over the past year in hopes of catching more dollar payments. Because of increased patrols and defenses on board ships, the success rate () has gone down, though the number of successful attacks has stayed the same year over year.

D. Pirate attacks are as serious as before along the Somali coast.

26. Which is true about the warship patrols according to the text?

A. The patrols are of little effect.

B. The patrols are more difficult.

C. More patrols are quite necessary even in Asia.

D. The patrols only drive the pirates to other areas.

27. How many sailors were held by the pirates up to the time of the report?

A. 228.                 B. 77.                  C. 383.                D. 305.

London—What could possibly be wrong with planting trees? The benefits (益处) are obvious: they firm the soil soak up extra water and take carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) out of the atmosphere.

However, it now turns out that planting trees could add to global warming.Tree roots do a great job of keeping soil firmly on the ground and out of the wind’s power. The problem is that some of those dust clouds play an important part in soaking up carbon dioxide.

Huge dust storms which is generally believed to have done nothing favorable for man blow out over the oceans from dry parts of North Africa and Central Asia. Tons of dusts are lifted and left as a thin film over the ocean surface. The dust fuels oceanic life.

Dust from China is carried east and left in the Pacific Ocean. If a tree-planting programme there is successful and the dust supply reduced the next result may be that less carbon dioxide gets locked away in the ocean.

Andy Ridgwell an environmental scientist from the University of East Anglia has spent the past few years studying dust and says his work “shows clearly the complexity of the system and the importance of rat tinkering (修补) with it without

understanding the results. For this reason the need to focus (集中) on cutting carbon dioxide giving off rather than monkeying (瞎摆弄) about with the land surface. ”

An American scientist Robert Jackson has shown that when native grassland areas are invaded by trees carbon is lost from the soil. “We are studying why the soil carbon disappears but one theory is that trees do a lot more of their growing above ground compared to grasses so less carbon goes directly into the soil from trees. ” says Jackson.

In wet areas of the world the gain from trees absorbing carbon dioxide above ground seems to be outweighed by the loss of carbon from the soil below ground. Countries that plan to combat global warming by Planting trees may have to think again.

Solutions to environmental problems are often more complex than they first appear and understanding the Earth’s climate is a very great challenge.

28. People usually hold the opinion that ____________.

A. huge dust storms can destroy carbon dioxide

B. huge dust storms can destroy the oceans on the earth

C. planting trees could reduce global warming

D. planting trees is the only way to control huge dust storms

29. Andy Ridgwell, the environmental scientist believes that ____________.

A. dust plays a more important part than trees

B. trees shouldn’t have been planted in dry places

C. environmental problems are more complex than expected

D. carbon dioxide is harmful to everything

30. Robert Jackson’s experiment proves that ____________.

A. grassland areas should be covered by forests

B. trees hold more carbon than grass

C. less carbon can make trees grow faster

D. carbon can turn grass into dust

31. The underlined word “combat” in the text probably means ____________.

A. learn about      B. give up            C. live with         D. fight against

D

There are two basic ways to see growth: one as a product, the other as a process. People have generally viewed personal growth as an external (外在的) result or a product that can easily be identified and measured. The worker who gets a rise, the student whose grades improve, and the foreigner who learns a new language—all these examples of people who have measurable results to show for their efforts.

By contrast (对照), the process of personal growth is much more difficult to determine, since it is a journey and not the specific signposts or landmarks along the way. The process is not the road itself, but rather the attitudes and feelings people have, their caution or courage, as they meet with new experiences and unexpected difficulties. In this process, the journey never really ends; there are always new ways to experience the world, new ideas to try, new challenges to accept.

In order to grow, to travel new roads, people need to have a willingness to take risks, to face the unknown, and to accept the possibility that they may “fail” at first. How we see ourselves as we try a new way of being is essential to our ability to grow. Do we see ourselves as quick and curious? If so, then we tend to take more changes and to be more open to unfamiliar experiences. Do we think we’re shy and indecisive? Then our sense of fear can cause us to hesitate, to move slowly, and not to take a step until we know the ground is safe. Do we think we’re slow to adapt to change or that we’re not smart enough to deal with a new challenge? Then we are likely to take a more passive role or not try at all.

These feelings of insecurity and self-doubt are both unavoidable and necessary if we are to change and grow. If we do not face and overcome these internal fears and doubts, if we protect ourselves too much, then we stop growing. We become trapped inside a shell of our own making.

32. In the author’s eyes, one who views personal growth as a process would

____________.

A. succeed in climbing up the social ladder

B. judge his ability to grow from his own achievements

C. face difficulties and take up challenges

D. aim high and reach his goal each time

33. Which of the following can be viewed as the process of personal growth?

A. Our manager was always willing to accept new challenges.

B. Little Tom won the first prize in the Speech Contest.

C. Max picked up French while he was in Paris.

D. Daddy’s salary rose from $3,000 to $3,800.

34. For personal growth, the author is in favor of all the following EXCEPT

____________.

A. being curious about more changes

B. being quick in self-adaptation

C. having an open mind to new experiences

D. staying away from failures and challenges

35. The best title for this passage should be ____________.

A. Facing new challenges

B. Growthproduct or process

C. Unavoidable feeling of self-doubt

D. Overcoming internal fears

第二节 (5小题;每小题2, 满分10)

根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Get to know yourself as an investor with simple questions

As investors, we need to truly know ourselves.    36    Writing out our personal preferences, numerical goals, and individual time frames can facilitate our decision-making. Here are several questions you should address to help you better understand yourself.

   37

A person in his or her twenties may have more difficulty saving money than a person in his or her fifties. On the other hand, an investor in his or her twenties may be more inclined to take a higher level of investment risk than an investor who plans on retiring in the next few years because he or she has more time to make back any lost money.

When did you start investing?

If you have years of experience with investing, your confidence will probably be higher than that of a new investor.    38    Before determining your risk preference, it would be wise to consider your experience and confidence.

How much can you afford to lose?

Weigh your possible risk versus your possible reward. Write down the percentage of your portfolio that you believe you can afford to lose.    39

With a higher affordable percentage, one could potentially consider more risky investments.

How often do you regret bad choices?

40    How long did it take for you to get over those choices? Are you the kind of person who can forget about poor choices, label them as sunk costs, and walk away? Or, do you wish things had worked out differently? If you regret “bad choices” for a long time, extremely risky or short-term investment might not be fit for your personality type. Knowing yourself can make it easier to select the most comfortable investments for you.

A. How old are you?

B. How much money do you need to save?

C. It is one of the most important aspects in financial planning.

D. Think back to the poor choices you’ve made.

E. Oftentimes, experience leads to greater tolerance for riskier investments.

F. Many of our money-saving habits are driven by our age.

G. When doing so, consider your budget, your employment stability, and your

income.
